Exhibition: Lajos Vajda Studio 1972-2002
The Vajda Lajos Studio consists of a large group of independent artists, mostly autodidacts, each of whom has developed an individual visual language. The origins of the cohesiveness of the group lie in the spirit of the place and the group’s attachment to Szentendre and its artistic traditions, including the progressive artists of the Európai Iskola (European School) in the 1940s, neo-avant-garde traditions, and experimentalism. Furthermore, some of the members are also interested in the local folklore and even ancient culture and kitsch.
As their circle was permitted to run a cellar gallery in Szentendre beginning in 1973, they arranged many exhibitions, performances, and concerts, thus creating a real artistic community over the course of the years. This led to the development of a vital alternative scene still vibrant today, bringing in a third generation of artists from Szentendre.
The exhibition presented a selection of historical works created in a period beginning in the late 1960s and lasting into early 1990s, as well as new works by the studio members. The historical part was displayed in three crowded rooms, while the new works occupied six halls in which the works were not as densely clustered. A documentary section was dedicated to the actions, happenings, performances, and concerts that had been held in the Vajda Lajos Studio over the course of the years.Exhibiting artists: Agócs, Attila; Aknay, János; Almási, Gertrúd; Balogh, István Vilmos; Bán, Miklós; Benkovits, Balázs; Benkovits, Bálint; Bereznai, Péter; Bernáth y, Sándor; Bernáth y, Zsigmond; Borgó, György Csaba; Bukta, Imre; Csajka, Gábor Cyprian; Csontó, Lajos; Frózsi-Nánássy, Tibor; Gosztola, Gábor; Gubis, Mihály; Győrffy, Sándor; Haász, István; Holdas, György; Imre, Mariann; Imreh, Tibor; Iványi, Norbert; Joláthy, Attila; Kis Tóth, Ferenc; K.
