• Žarana Papić was born on July 4, 1949 in Sarajevo. She taught sociology at the University of Belgrade, where she earned a doctorate in anthropology. The professor was one of the founders of the feminist movement in Yugoslavia and co-founder of the Belgrade Center for Women’s Studies in 1992.

  Žarana Papić is remembered as one of the pioneers of Yugoslav feminism. She set high standards in theory and in activism, struggling for a more equal and fairer society.

  The Žarana Papić collection contains over 2,000 books and other valuable documents dedicated to the history of the feminist movement in Serbia and Yugoslavia. Shortly after Žarana Papić died in 2002, her legacy was donated to the Center for Women’s Studies in Belgrade in 2003.

  Women’s studies in Belgrade were initiated in 1991 by the Belgrade feminist group Woman and Society. The first, experimental one-semester course began symbolically on March 8 (International Women’s Day) in 1992. From that the Center for Women’s Studies emerged as a non-profit and non-governmental organization, based in Belgrade. It describes itself as independent from political structures or groups. The fundamental task of the Center for Women’s Studies is to support and improve theoretical models that embrace differences and plurality. The most important aim of the center is the theoretical examination of the possibility of resistance and of political action against social practices of discrimination and exclusion based on sex, skin color, class, gender, sexuality and ethnic, national as well as religious affiliation.

• The Žarana Papić Collection at the Center for Women’s Studies in Belgrade contains over 2,000 books and other valuable documents (student card of Žarana Papić, teaching material of her university courses, notes, photographies) dedicated to the history of the feminist movement in Serbia and Yugoslavia. The collection contains the documentation about the first feminist conference in Yugoslavia which was called Drug-ca žena: Žensko pitanje- novi pristup? [Comrade Woman: The Female Question – A New Approach?]. It took place in the Student Cultural Center (SKC) from October 27 to November 2, 1978, in Belgrade (see Featured Item). Daša Duhaček holds the private correspondence of Žarana Papić that is not yet available for researchers.
