In 1992, László Szabédi’s sister, Rozália Székely turned one of the rooms of the family-house in Cluj into a memorial room. Upon her death in 1996, the family left the house to the Hungarian Cultural Society of Transylvania. Next year, the Society went in quest of available literary heritages of Transylvanian Hungarian writers, and addressed a call signed by Gyula Dávid and József Kötő to the heirs of about 50 authors. The main aim was to keep literary documents in Transylvania, to preserve them, and to maintain an accessible archive for research.
By 2002, the storage capacity of the Memorial House reached its limits, and the renovation and enlargement of the three-room house became imperious. Thanks to grants issued in Hungary, the Society managed to enlarge the building with one extra floor. The new building was inaugurated two years later, in 2007, at the 100th anniversary of Szabédi László. By this time, the heritage books were shelved, and the memorial room was restored according to the wishes of the testator.
In 2008, József Kötő launched a novel call in the Transylvanian mass media with the aim of collecting novel materials. As a result, the holdings of the Memorial House were enlarged with documents pertaining to the domain of theatre history.
